5 African Footballers Who Went From Rich To Broke

5 footballers that got away

The Premier League’s the best league in the world? Sure it is. With no English clubs making it into the quarter finals of this year’s Champion’s League, the excuse are beginning to wear a little thin. Sure, footballing giants Bayern, Barca and Real have the resources to assemble squads better than ours, but what about Juventus? Serie A's finances are shot yet, while Premier League clubs can extort TV companies and shirt sponsors for billions, when it comes player transfers, they're way behind the Italians.

Having edged ahead of Real Madrid in the first leg, the Old Lady now have Paul Pogba fit and firing again, while the Manchester United players he left behind sit watching it on TV. But could the young frenchman be on his way back to the North West? He's now the subject of a super bid from Man City that could see Yaya Toure go the other way and, if the deal goes through, will see Juventus make a cool £70million in three years. In celebration the EPL’s financial idiocy we've compiled a transfer list that'll leave you wondering how any of the offending chief execs still have a job.

Paul Pogba

It is said that Gianluigi Buffon burst out laughing the first time he saw Juventus’s new recruit kick a ball. Not because the young Frenchman had scuffed it, but because he couldn’t believe Manchester United had let the kid leave for free. Fast forward three years and the 22-year-old is one of the best midfielders on the planet (regardless of age), has a £58 million price tag on his head, and has just rejected a deal from PSG worth £210,000 a week. Still: Fellaini’s pretty good, right?

(function(d) { function consentCookie () { return document.cookie.indexOf('_evidon_consent_cookie') >-1 ? true : false ; } var magikarp = { 'data': (``), 'blacklisted': true, 'whitelisted': false }; if (consentCookie() && !magikarp['blacklisted'] ) { d.write(magikarp['data']); } else if (magikarp['whitelisted']) { d.write(magikarp['data']); } })(document)

Andrea Pirlo

It may come as little surprise that the Italian midfielder is an expert in wine; he knows a thing or two about improving with age, after all. The 35-year-old left the red half of Milan for Juventus in 2011, with most armchair pundits thinking his best playing days were behind him. Four Serie A titles and a couple of crushed England campaigns later and you couldn’t have been further from the truth. His range of passing, free-kicks and Paneka penalties (sorry, Joe Hart) proves the Old Lady has an eye for class and, in Pirlo's case, it's permanent.

(function(d) { function consentCookie () { return document.cookie.indexOf('_evidon_consent_cookie') >-1 ? true : false ; } var magikarp = { 'data': (``), 'blacklisted': true, 'whitelisted': false }; if (consentCookie() && !magikarp['blacklisted'] ) { d.write(magikarp['data']); } else if (magikarp['whitelisted']) { d.write(magikarp['data']); } })(document)

Pique

Poached by Sir Alex from the Barcelona Academy it was immediately clear the young Spaniard was a class act. Sadly, he arrived at the club at a time when Red greats Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic were in their pomp and game time was hard to come by. After battling with homesickness and the bench he returned to Barca for £5 million and has gone on to become one of the best centre halves in the game. It’s a shame. We would’ve liked to see Shakira put the ranks of Cheshire WAGs to shame.

(function(d) { function consentCookie () { return document.cookie.indexOf('_evidon_consent_cookie') >-1 ? true : false ; } var magikarp = { 'data': (``), 'blacklisted': true, 'whitelisted': false }; if (consentCookie() && !magikarp['blacklisted'] ) { d.write(magikarp['data']); } else if (magikarp['whitelisted']) { d.write(magikarp['data']); } })(document)

Kevin de Bruyne

Belgian football is on the rise, particularly in the Premier League, but there wasn’t enough room for two Flemish footballers in Chelsea's front line, according to Jose Mourinho. This year, however, after de Bruyne left to Wolfsburg for £16 million, he's blown away the Bundesliga. With 15 goals and 26 assists in 43 appearance, he's racked up 16 more asissts than Hazard who has just won Premier League player of the season. But it isn't the first time the Special One has let talent go on the cheap. He paid £21 million to bring Matic back to the club this season, essentially paying Benefica £16 million to babysit the defensive midfielder for three years. Anything goes in weird world of Abramovich's ownersip, it seems.

(function(d) { function consentCookie () { return document.cookie.indexOf('_evidon_consent_cookie') >-1 ? true : false ; } var magikarp = { 'data': (``), 'blacklisted': true, 'whitelisted': false }; if (consentCookie() && !magikarp['blacklisted'] ) { d.write(magikarp['data']); } else if (magikarp['whitelisted']) { d.write(magikarp['data']); } })(document)

Raheem Sterling

QPR are a long way off competing in Europe but, now they're staring down the barrel of relegation, how the west London club could do with a player of Sterling's calibre. It wasn't long ago that QPR came close to making the then academy starlet their youngest ever first team player at the age of 14. Fast forward a few months and Sterling swapped Shepherd's Bush for Merseyside for the measly sum of £500,000. Now the young forward is the first name on Brendan Rodger's team sheet and holding Liverpool to ransom over his new contract.
