6 of the best lightweight raincoats
Burberrys iconic coat was worn by British troops in the First World War trenches, and the lightweight, waterproof style that protected infantry in those hellish conditions has since enjoyed a second life as a city staple. Appropriately enough in the centenary year, this more casual iteration features an array of nods to its battle-worn predecessor; epaulettes, belted cuffs and a neck latch. Luckily, you get to sling it on over a button-down and denim, rather than mud-ravaged khaki.

Pass the mustard
As the days lengthen most men reach for their dullest colours. So as everyone else blends into a navy and grey background, the sartorial baller should make a statement by donning something bolder, like this mustard yellow mac from London designer Oliver Spencer. The colours seasonally muted but still makes an impact, and if your boss demands suited sobriety just wear it over a mid-grey flannel two-piece and stow it when you hit your desk.

A touch parky
The Inuit came up with the parka to keep frozen winds off their faces, but on these shores rolling round town trussed up in seal fur and whale oil is overkill. British design icon Margaret Howells take is more sensible, jettisoning the bulk in favour of something waterproof but lightweight and cut loose enough to fit over as many layers as the forecast demands.

Take it to the Macs
The brand synonymous with raincoats launched its first mac in 1824 and, in the ensuing 190 years, has barely changed its style. Which is understandable; you dont mess with a classic. This seasons versions run the gamut from eye-popping scarlet to traditional tan, but were particularly taken with these chunky checks. Proof that you can go brown without being beige.

British brand Aquascutum has a fair claim to the invention of the trench coat, although its version didnt get the military seal of approval like Burberry. Its wet-weather heritage is undoubted and means that even a jacket as simple as this single-breasted raincoat boasts concealed seams and showerproof cotton to ensure youre able to weather any, well, weather.

J Crews cotton raincoat sits somewhere between a trench and duffel, picking up the formers belt, epaulettes and map pockets, and the latters hood and toggles. That means you can wear it to dress down your suit or to dress up your chinos. Best avoid pairing it with a red hat and wellingtons anywhere near Paddington Station, though. Especially if youre eating marmalade sandwiches.
