If you were onJeopardy!and the category was Superstar Vitamins and Minerals, you’d likely miss a key player: magnesium. "It's like the shy sister, hiding behind calcium and iron—most people don't even know what it is or what it does," says Leslie Bonci, RD, director of sports nutrition at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. In fact, 57% of Americans have "no idea" how magnesium keeps us healthy, according to a new survey byPreventionand supplement company Centrum.

Despite this oversight, magnesium is key to almost every tissue and physical function in your body, Bonci says, including using energy efficiently, maintaining muscle and nerve, boosting immunity, regulating blood sugar and blood pressure, and protecting the heart. Yet a whopping 68% of Americans fall short of the Recommended Daily Allowance for the essential mineral, or 320 mg for women and 420 mg for men. What's more, our guts absorb less magnesium while our kidneys excrete more of the mineral as we age. Plus, many medications like diuretics can compound the loss. 

Think you might be among the two-thirds plus of the population low in magnesium? Deficiencies have been linked to fatigue, depression, and muscle cramps, along with a higher risk of migraines, asthma, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and colon cancer. 

Fortunately, magnesium is found in a variety of foods, especially healthy, fiber-rich fare such as dark leafy greens (try baby spinach, collard greens, kale, and Swiss chard) and nuts and seeds (try pumpkin, almonds, sunflower, Brazil nuts, cashews, pine nuts, flaxseed, and pecans). 

Use the following cheat sheet to make sure you’re getting your daily dose of magnesium. For women, this can be as easy as a bowl of bran cereal for breakfast, an ounce of peanuts as a midday snack, and quinoa and spinach with dinner.
