Comic-Making App Bitstrips Goes Viral on Facebook
Facebook just got a bit more playful. As of Thursday, more than 11 million people have downloaded Bitstrips, the cartoon-making app that's taking social media by storm. Allowing users to create avatars of themselves and their friends, the unique tool has quickly garnered popularity in the past seven months, and the latest version, just released this week, offers over 1,000 different templates for the cartoon alter-egos.
Bitstrips is currently the number-one free app in iTunes and Google Play, and is available to Facebook, Android and iOS users. These single-scene comics are gradually taking over as a new form of status updates. "It's a new way to express yourself and interact with your friends. Instead of posting the same things as everyone else, you can create something that relates to your life," CEO Jacob Blackstock explains.
The Toronto-based company began a year ago and has garnered its following without incurring any advertising and acquisition costs. The app's target demographic is young adults ages 18 to 24, but for all Facebook users, Blackstock hopes that the cartoons will fix the "frustratingly flat" quality of social media today. The company's latest endeavors include developing plush Bitstrip toys and bringing comics to the classroom with Bitstrips for Schools.
While the app only continues to increase in popularity, not everyone is pleased with a more animated newsfeed, as many Facebook users realize that their friends are not as funny as they may try to be. Either way, the jokes—both good and bad—show no signs of stopping.
