Ellis Island is known as Island of Hope, Island of Tears. Walking around the decrepit, abandoned complex and seeing the ghastly images on the walls, I have a new appreciation for the name. As far as behind-the-scenes tours go, the Ellis Island hard hat tour is a must-do. I saw a whole side of the storied immigration complex that few people ever visit, and learned a lot about the history of immigration in the U.S. The 90-minute guided tours take visitors through the unrestored hospital buildings on the south side of the island. It's perfect for history buffs and anyone who wants a more in-depth Ellis Island experience. As a bonus, the decrepit hospital complex is also home to a fantastic photography exhibit by French street artist JR. The artist took archival photographs from Ellis Island and superimposed them over crumbling facades in the abandoned hospital. There are two dozen of these photos installed around the grounds.

We had an amazing time this past weekend at the Abandoned Ellis Island Hospital Tour. We've always been curious to attend this tour since it does offer some access to some secret spots. The Guide was fantastic, with complete knowledge of the history behind Ellis Island. We had access to out of bound spots which gave us the opportunity of taking super unique pictures! The tour lasted a bit more than 1.5h and the guide didn't seem to try and rush things. He was taking his time with us and answering all the questions the group had. It's great for couples, family, kids, friends, to go alone (I was alone), and event for businesses that want unique tours for employees or clients. The tour was literally fantastic!

The tour was great and our tour guide was wonderful! He gave us ample time to take photos and was very knowledgeable about the hospital and its history. All the proceeds of the tour go directly to restoring the hospital, so please go and support our city!
Great way to support our history!, Christin R
