How to Dress Like a Londoner, According to the Capital's Fashion Experts
Today is the first day of London Fashion Week, and so over the next five days, we will see the best of British style on (and off) the catwalk. Of course, there is no precise definition of "London style," as what is so celebrated about fashion in this city is that anything goes—there is no set uniform. There are, however, a number of styling mantras that Londoners swear by when getting dressed each morning.
We turned to some of the capital's most stylish editors fromMarie Claire,Cosmopolitan,InStyleand more for tips on how to re-create the Brit look—and the pieces that are at the top of their shopping lists now. Frankie Graddon, fashion and beauty editor of the Pool, thinks the secret is to mix high-end and high-street pieces. Meanwhile, Who What Wear UK's editorial director, Hannah Almassi, says that the most stylish Londoners will rely on the capital's emerging designers. Pandora Sykes, however, believes Londoners all have fun with their style and that you shouldn't be afraid of mixing prints and statement accessories.

Have fun with unexpected pairings
"It's virtually impossible to summarise a city look, but I do think the Londoner has fun with her style," says freelance journalist and podcast co-host Pandora Sykes. "I know that seems obvious—indeed fashion as a whole is pretty fun right now—but for me, it means print and pattern, and great earrings!"
Master the High-Low Mix
Style du Monde
On Alexa Chung:Marks & Spencer vinyl trench coat.
"The key to London style? Versatility and creativity," says Frankie Graddon, fashion and beauty editor of The Pool. "Versatility because you never know what the day is going to throw at you, so being ready for almost anything is important. And creativity, because we have a brilliant pool of design talent and one of the best high streets on the globe. There's so much choice! Mixing and matching are key; a great high-street boot you can pound pavements in (like these from Office), put together with an elevating bag; I love J.W.Anderson for quirk. Of course, you'll need a rainproof coat like Alexa Chung's M&S coat (this is England, after all)."
Favour London-based labels
On Yasmin Sewell:Rejina Pyo dress.
"Dressing like aLondonermeans two things: Firstly, dressing for whatever unpredictable (read: rubbish) weather is thrown at you," says Almassi. "Secondly, it's about wearing what makes you happy. There's no worrying about what someone on the tube will think or whether your non-fashion mates will mock you at the pub—this is a place where everything goes! And we're particularly proud of our homegrown talent, so my number one way to dress like aLondoneris to wear London-based labels like Yasmin Sewell in Rejina Pyo—the more obscure and in-the-know, the better."
Nothing is too matchy-matchy
Style du Monde
"The key to London style is that nothing is too considered or matchy-matchy," says Amy Bannerman, the fashion director ofCosmopolitan. "Us Brits aren't as considered in the way we dress as in other countries. It's a case of expecting the unexpected and anything goes, which is fine by me!"
Look for shoes to make commuters smile
"I think London style is all about having fun with clothes while also making them work really hard," says InStyle UK's style director, Chloe MacDonnell. "Londoners rarely get changed for evening events, so you've got to really plan in the morning and choose pieces that can really work for any occasion. Plus, I think in London you have to be a little practical too. I take the tube and walk a lot, so there's no way I'm leaving the house in spindly heels, nor am I ever going to wear gym trainers and change when I get to where I need to be. Instead, I go for a smart loafer and for warmer months a backless version. I've been hitting refresh on a pair of Gucci Princetown appliquéd slippers for the past three months to see if they finally have them in stock in my size, and I love Dorateymur for a bit of a lift.
