Modernising Mormugao Port May Not Be the Ultimate Answer to Goa's Problems

13 Oct: The Wire. By Tania Devaiah. One of India’s oldest and largest ports, Mormugao Port is about to see some major changes if things go according to plan for the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT). The latest proposal for modernisation and expansion of this port is being hailed by the port authorities as the ultimate answer to the problems of the state. But curiously, bundled along with the proposal to build a brand new fishing harbour are five other proposals – to build a liquid cargo berth which will handle petroleum, oil, lubricants (POL), LPG etc. This bouquet of projects was set to be scrutinised by the citizens living in a ten-km impact radius at a public hearing on October 5… It was clear that the district administration wanted to finish the proceedings in one day and not allow a repeat of last year’s marathon seven-day public hearing. Of 44 registered speakers on Day 1, 19 presented detailed objections quoting problematic and confusing sections of the EIA… Goa citizens are no strangers to the public hearing process … October 5, 2018 too proved to be a demonstration of citizens exercising their right to participate in democratic decision making, especially as it relates to the survival of their livelihood and future generations… 1718 words.  For further details

The great Indian hip scam

12 Oct: Herald. Report by Gladstone D’Costa, an Orthopaedic Surgeon. Virtually any joint in either of the extremities can be replaced today. In western countries the most common is the hip joint. In Asians there is a genetic preponderance of knee replacements… Against the background of the chaos in the international scene over the use of metal on metal hip implants, the situation in India was appalling. The company J&J, and its local subsidiary DePuy continued to sell the implants in India in spite of the serious developments in UK, USA, Australia, NZ and Europe; even as compensation figures were being discussed in the US… 15820 prostheses were imported, records of 4700 surgeries were traced 1295 were returned. That left 9825 unaccounted for. This country neither has a joint registry programme like the UK, nor does it have a culture of publishing failure rates… In summary, it was criminally negligent of J&J and DePuy to foist on the Indian public a metal on metal hip prostheses with a high recorded failure rate reported more than 40 years back…  For further details

Lush, riparian Goa is still amply blessed with water resources thanks to the spectacular Western Ghats biosphere … But despite these precious advantages, trouble is unmistakably gathering for this rain-drenched paradise…  For further details

Non-Resident Indians: Are they contributing to India’s growth?

11 Oct: News D. India will hold its 15th NRI Convention from January 21 to 23 in Varanasi. But does it hold any purpose for the country at all? Critics say it has turned into a rich NRIs’ platform where poor diaspora has hardly any say on any matter related to NRIs. While this comment is largely true, but it will be improper to trash the importance of the platform which aims to help diaspora bond with the country of their origin and bring out the best out of them in terms of knowledge, skill and investments… officials from the finance ministry and the RBI are discussing a plan to raise money from non-resident Indians. At a time when Goa’s tourism industry is keeping its fingers crossed, hoping for a good season amidst fierce competition from other affordable destinations, a significant drop in charter flights in the very first month has led to some anxious discussions on whether foreign arrivals will cross last season’s mark. The debate is relevant, as November could see a 30 percent fall in charter landings, even as slot allotment for many charter airlines have not yet been finalised… the schedule for October shows no sign of flights from any country apart from Russia, not even UK which otherwise brings in a substantial number of tourists to the State… The expectations for October, when compared to earlier seasons, indicates a very disappointing start to the 2018-19 tourist season…  For further details

Canada: Lindsay Pereira: I Was Taught Indian Men Like Me Don't Cry

8 Oct: Huffington Post Canada. Lindsay Pereira Journalist, columnist, editor, digital strategist and massive Tori Amos fan. I was raised in a small Roman Catholic corner of Mumbai, India, a part of the world that simply didn't teach men to accept death, let alone deal with the emotions it leaves in its wake… We shied away from displays of grief … My father armed me with no clues — my uncles with no pointers on how they coped with their own losses… I fail to understand why men are held to this stoicism where I come from… I find it strange that my culture in South Asia constructs gender roles that damage men and women in different ways, holding them to ideals that are demeaning at best and damaging at their worst… I find myself questioning the idea of what it means to be an South Asian man a lot more as I get older.  For further details
