The Way This Male Beauty Vlogger Conceals Acne Is Mesmerizing
Jake-Jamie Ward, aka "The Beauty Boy" on YouTube, has made it his mission to shake up society's stereotypical view of makeup — and he's doing just that. With his flawless foundation tutorials that he shares with his 16,000 subscribers on YouTube and 13,000 followers on Instagram, Ward not only started the #MakeupIsGenderless movement to help spread a message of inclusivity (which went viral and even caught the attention of celebrity makeup artists, like Charlotte Tilbury, and beauty giant L'Oréal, who signed him as the first U.K. male spokesperson for the brand), he's managed to come up with an acne-covering technique that'll cover your blemishesandleave you with a natural-looking complexion that's flawless AF.
See! Don't you want your skin to look blemish-free like his?! I do.
Ward's M.O.: "I wear makeup in a natural and functional, rather than decorative, way," Ward told Cosmopolitan.com. "I don’t wish to change the way I look, just enhance and cover areas of my skin that have drained my confidence."
Ward took a liking to makeup when he was 19 years old, dealing with breakouts that weresoserious he didn't want to leave his house. He remembers standing in the makeup aisle at Boots surrounded by advertisements featuring only women, which made him feel ashamed of even entertaining the idea of using makeup to boost his self-esteem. Finally, after feeling frustrated with the cosmetic industry's narrow focus on female audiences, he decided to do something about it.
"I wanted to normalize men in makeup," Ward told Cosmopolitan.com. "Many men feel the pressure to look good and simply meet beauty standards in the same way that women do. We are all humans, we get anxiety and have body image issues too. Our sex should be completely irrelevant." True that. So he figured out a way to conceal his complexion so it appeared crystal-clear without looking caked-on.
Now, for Ward's secret to acing his base: the "target and blend" method that involves using a full-coverage foundation and a Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge. Watch and learn:
For a quick breakdown, here's Ward's how-to:
1. Apply a full-coverage foundation, working from the outside of your face inward. He starts out by applying foundation with a makeup sponge from the perimeter of his face working inward, gently patting it over his blemishes, and leaving the center of his face pretty bare. If you have areas, such as your forehead, that are blemish-free, Ward recommends skipping foundation on those areas to maintain a natural look.
